Peter P. Cloherty Obituary

SO. STATION TRAFFIC COP DIES AT 50
Thousands of motorists and pedestrians who daily greeted Traffic Officer Peter P. Cloherty on his post at Summer st. and Dorchester ave., opposite South Station, will greet him there no more.
The usually smiling traffic officer, who seldom lost his good humor, died today at City Hospital following a major operation. He was 50 years old and lived with his family in Allston st., Brighton.
Last July, Traffic Officer Cloherty's host of friends in his downtown area were concerned when he was injured on post by the rear end of a trolley car as it swung into Summer st. from Dorchester ave.
He was taken then to City Hospital and treated for injuries to his right side and back. However, he returned to duty after a few days.
The popular officer was appointed a patrolman July 30, 1926, and had served at Milk st. and Brighton stations before being assigned to the traffic division.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Sarah Cloherty; two sons, Joseph E. Cloherty, 23, in the Army Air Corps at Las Vegas, Nev., and Peter J. Cloherty, 20, stationed at Camp Lee, Va., and three daughters-Sally Cloherty, 19; Miriam [Mary M.] Cloherty, 15, and Ann W. Cloherty, 13.
