Overview

The Sources Section controls citations, sources, and related options.

Citation Properties

Show Citations

If Show Citations is checked, Second Site will add superscripted citation reference numbers in the person page entry for data that has one or more citations. The reference numbers refer to entries in a list of citations that follow the person page entry for the current subject. The default value is checked.

Citation Sentence

Citations are constructed using the template (AKA sentence) selected in the Citation Sentence pull-down menu. The default is "Short Footnote". Citation output will include the citation detail, if any.

If you choose Full, then Short in the Citation Sentence pull-down menu, the first citation to a source for a particular person page entry will use the full footnote sentence. Any subsequent citation to the same source for the same person entry will use the short footnote sentence.

Second Site combines unique citations, but only in the scope of a single person page entry.

Show Citation Source Numbers

If Show Citation Source Numbers is checked, each citation entry includes the number of the source it cites. The default value is checked.

If Show Citation Source Numbers is unchecked, Show Sources is disabled; without a source number, the citation cannot link to a source page entry.

Source Properties

Show Sources

If Show Sources is checked, each citation entry includes a link to a source page and positions the page to a source page entry that describes the source in more detail. The default value is checked.

Source Sentence

Source page entries are constructed using the sentence selected in the Source Sentence pull-down menu. The default is "Full Footnote".

If there are exhibits attached to a source, you have the option of linking or embedding the exhibit. If source exhibits are linked, Second Site will include an icon after the source entry on the source page. Clicking the icon displays the exhibit on a separate page. If source exhibits are embedded, Second Site inserts the exhibit on the source page following the source entry. See the Exhibits page for more information about exhibits.

Other Properties

Name Format Options

Three properties control the format of names included in the output via a source element. Each property controls names rendered for a particular template. The choices are the same for all three properties:

Choice Example
GivenName Surname John Smith
Surname, GivenName Smith, John
Surname Smith

The Full Footnote Name Format property determines the format of name elements when using the Full footnote template. The default is "GivenName Surname".

The Short Footnote Name Format property determines the format of name elements when using the Short footnote template. The default is "GivenName Surname".

The Bibliography Name Format property determines the format of name elements when using the Bibliography template. The default is "Surname, GivenName".

Script EMail Addresses

The Script EMail Addresses checkbox controls whether or not Second Site hides e-mail addresses in source entries. When checked, Second Site will substitute JavaScript in place of an actual e-mail address. This protects the privacy of your fellow researchers, and helps prevent the proliferation of spam. (E-mail addresses included on web pages can be harvested by software that searches the web looking for them.) The default value is checked.

You cannot tell that the e-mail address is hidden by viewing the page in a browser. You must look at the HTM file using a text editor.

Please be aware that a very diligent harvester could still find the e-mail address.

Truncate Long URLs

Second Site searches citation and source entries for URLs. When it finds one, it turns the URL into an HTML link. If Truncate Long URLs is checked, Second Site will truncate long URLs and substitute an ellipsis ("…"). Truncating URLs prevents long URLs from disrupting page formatting because they do not wrap at the container border.

CD in Source Sentences

Source sentences on Source pages do not include the citation detail, as the entry applies to all citations to the source and there is no citation detail in context when the sentence is constructed.

Second Site does not remove the references to CD elements from the sentence; if the CD variable reference is not conditional, Second Site will substitute the "missing element" text in place of the variable reference.

Split CDs

Some users who have sources designed for use with split CDs have found that they have to modify their source sentences to get good results with Second Site. The basic idea is to decide what information is shared across citations. Those elements can be unconditional in the source sentence. The remaining items will be provided via the CD or split CD, and those elements should be conditional. Using that approach, the citation and source pages created by Second Site should be fine.

Bibiliography Sentences

Please note that choosing "Bibliography" for either the Citation Sentence or the Source Sentence does not produce a bibliography; it only changes the citation sentence or the source sentence to use the source's bibliography sentence. That may or may not make sense based on the contents of the bibliography sentences.

TMG Version 4 Limitation

Second Site can not determine whether the Source Categories in TMG version 4 datasets are based upon Mills, Lackey, or Custom categories; the user must set a preference using the File > Preferences > Source Category... command to indicate which system is in use. Second Site can determine the Source Category in use for TMG version 5 (or greater) projects.
