Description

The compatability.ini file controls whether the current version of TMG Utility will open TMG projects with a particular version number.

When TMG is updated, TMG Utility will refuse to open or modify projects created or updated by the new version until a new compatability.ini file is installed. That ensures that the proper testing takes place before TMG Utility is used with the new project format.

As a result of the version checking that is controlled by the compatability.ini file, you may see the message below when you try to open a TMG project using TMG Utility:

This program does not support TMG project version N databases. You may need a new version of TMG Utility or a new version of the compatability check file. See http://www.JohnCardinal.com/tmgutil.

If TMG Utility displays the message above then you should download and install the most recent compatability file.

The latest version of compatability.ini allows TMG Utility 6.0 to open all TMG v5.* projects and all TMG v6 projects up to TMG v6.07.

Step by Step

  1. Download the compat.zip file.
  2. compat.zip contains a single file named compatability.ini. Extract/unzip compatability.ini and save it in the TMG Utility program folder. By default, that folder is c:\Program Files\TMG Utility.

There will be a compatability.ini file in that folder already. It's OK to overwrite it.

  3. Start TMG Utility and attempt to open the project again.

If you get the same message, then you need a newer version of TMG Utility. If there is no newer version, then you will have to wait for it. Rest assured that I am aware of the issue; I am a TMG beta tester and I know in advance when new versions will be released. I do not start compatability testing until after TMG is released because I do not have the time to do the compatability testing multiple times. I wait for the final, released version.

TMG Version Numbers

The TMG project number is related to the TMG version number, but it is not the same. For example, TMG v6.07 writes TMG projects with a version number of 7.0; the program version is 6.07 but the project version is 7.0. The warning message in TMG Utility displays the project version number.
